A one-on-one wizard sport played in the air.

Free on Mac and Windows.

If you’ve played Rocket League, you already know the idea: jump, fly and knock the glowing ember through your opponent’s hoop. Here you’re a wizard, and the whole sky is in play.

Free alpha. You’ll make a quick account when the game opens.Keyboard and mouse work. A controller feels best.

A double tap, from my own camera.

Win $200 with a friend.

The Founders Cup is a free 2v2 tournament. Grab a teammate and play. If a friend you invited wins, you win too.

Next cup night Thursday, October 8, 8 pm ET

I made this game, and I’m still bronze at it.

Every Thursday at 8 pm Eastern I open a room, post the code in Discord and play anyone who shows up. If you beat me in a full match, your name goes on this page.

Play night: Thursdays at 8 pm ET, starting September 24

Players who have beaten me

  1. ThatGuy1
  2. N3154N
  3. XxWaterStone_

A match against another player at play night also counts toward Founding Alpha.

Here’s the whole game.

  • Score. The ember is the glowing gold ball. Get it through your opponent’s hoop.
  • Fly. Jump once to hop, then jump again in midair to start flying. Boost, steer and roll wherever you want to go.
  • Tackle. On the ground, charge up a tackle to knock your opponent over, or fake it and slip past them.
  • Finish. Whoever has more goals when the clock runs out wins, and a tie goes to sudden death.

Play a friend online with a room code, warm up against the sparring bot, or practice alone in free play and trials.

Defense counts too. Two saves from the same match.

A wizard wearing a lavender octopus hat with sleepy eyes, its tentacles curling over the brim
An embercast: one player’s lavender octopus.

Turn an ember into anything you can describe, then wear it.

It’s called embercasting. Say what you want, like a pumpkin with a crooked smile, a toaster or your cat asleep, and the ember takes that shape. A few minutes later it’s a real 3D piece on your wizard, in every match you play.

Every embercast is one of one, made from your words, so a wizard wearing four of them is hard to miss. I don’t know of another game that lets you do this.

Make your first embercast

The first two embercasts players made.

Each one started as a single sentence.

A wizard turning in place in a gold skull hat with glowing pink eyes and violet flames
“A gold skull helmet with pink glowing eyes and violet flames.”
A wizard turning in place in a mossy green wizard hat with stubby goat horns and a small heart on the front
“A mossy green wizard hat with stubby goat horns and a little heart on the front.”

Or mix pieces from the shop.

Swap hats, outfits and shoes between collections until the look is yours.

What I’m trying to make

I want to make a game with a few simple rules that people could spend years getting good at.

What interests me is how a game can stay essentially the same while the way people play it keeps changing. Someone discovers a technique. Someone else finds an answer. Players teach each other, develop styles, build rivalries. Their understanding grows, and familiar situations become interesting in new ways.

Rocket League is the game that made me fall in love with that possibility. It’s soccer with rocket-powered cars: two goals, a ball, and vehicles that can jump and fly. You can understand the objective immediately. Learning what you can do with your car can take years.

I love that the game gives you so much room to develop. As your control improves, you begin to see opportunities that were always there but that you couldn’t recognize or act on. Watching a better player can change your understanding of something you thought you knew.

A decade in, its basic premise still holds. The players keep finding reasons to care. That’s deeply inspiring to me. I think more games should trust a simple core enough to let a passionate community spend years exploring it.

That’s the ambition behind Embercast. I’m trying to make a small set of physical interactions that feel good, respond clearly, and give you freedom to experiment. I want the game to get out of your way. If I can get that core right, I’d love for it to remain essentially permanent while the techniques and strategies around it evolve.

But that requires accepting something a little uncomfortable: in Rocket League terms,

I’m currently bronze at my own game.

When a move feels awkward, I have to ask whether the controls need work or whether I need practice. I can change the rules whenever I want. That makes it easy to simplify something before I understand what mastering it might make possible.

Sometimes the right thing to do is leave it alone and keep playing.
